A user just reported a problem to me that's a different vein (I think) than
the emacs discussion we've been having here recently.

The problem is that if I launch a VNC viewer session from an HP-UX 10.20
machine, and I'm trying to use emacs, there are some problems with the
Meta keys. (I've only tested this to VNC servers running on an HP machine.)

For example, entering the keystroks Ctrl-h c Meta-f should return "M-f runs
the command forward-word". But instead, from an HP keyboard, I get the
resuld "M-hpguilder runs the command forward-word".

The problem exists using both AT&T and Tridia 1.4.0 viewers, and suggests
the problem was introduced at build time. But I don't think I have the
knowledge to know where it came from.

Suggestions?
