Having read all the replies re SP6 (a) I guess that I have mistaken SP6 with
SP6a (or at least the problems associated with one of them)

So if SP6a is the fixed SP6 than there probably would not be any problem
using it,

I have had various problems with SP6 (random blue screens) and have had to
rebuild my pc (and various others) with sp5 and these are still running
smoothly.

What i have learned from this is not to apply a new service pack the moment
it is being released but to wait (or to install the service pack using the
backup option) , especially since service pack 5 was causing no problems
whatsoeve.

I am aware of the glaring fubars present in SP4, and that SP5 fixed at
least some of those. What was so bad about SP6a? It worked fine on my
machine for quite awhile.

Of course, VB6 (Visual Basic 6) hosed the registry while trying to
process
a VB5 project, and the machine never fully recovered. Dunno if that was
an
SP6 problem or a VB6 problem.

Just like to know why I'm avoiding things, to a little more detail than
my
normal paranoid fear that if Microsoft touches anything it'll break
unrecoverably.
