In this situation I think the best answer available at present is
to install an SSH server on the firewall, and allow SSH connections
from the Internet to the firewall (but not necessarily to machines
behind the firewall). Then use SSH tunnels to handle VNC connections.
This is fairly easy to set up (instructions are available on the
VNC web site http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc ), though it
is a bit of a hassle.

Of course, if you don't have access to the firewall, or the
administrator perversely refuses to allow SSH connections, you
are SOL. But I would argue that, since you *must* open some
port, all other things being equal, the SSH port (22) is the
best candidate from a security perspective (and I assume
you are security conscious, given the existing firewall setup).
