I've heard about that but in this case it couldn't happen in 4MB.

    1280 * 1024 * 24 / 8 / 1024 / 1024
    3.75
    1280 * 1024 * 32 / 8 / 1024 / 1024
    5.00

I couldn't run 24bpp until a later XFree86 supported it;  32bpp wasn't
possible.

Netscape, GIMP, xv, ..., all OK, this is the first time I've hit it.

Thanks, but I don't think I could stand that :-)
I'll switch to 16bpp for vncviewer compatibility.
