Well, I've searched Internet a little and here are some results
describing the problem. And it seems like the problem is not only
about gcc and is not VNC-specific, it's rather an issue with imake
stuff included in VNC distribution (and in XFree86 distributions,
too).

Here are some links you might want to read:

  http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/1998-10/msg00123.html
  http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/1998-11/msg00367.html
  http://mlarchive.ima.com/axp-list/2000/0154.html

Also, I've found that this issue has been discussed in _this_ mailing
list several times.

Looking into the source RPM package of VNC for Red Hat Linux, I've
noticed that there is a patch for Imake configs included in SRPM that
could address the problem we are discussing. Please try to apply that
patch to the TightVNC source, then try to complile it and report
results here. I have no machines where VNC failed to compile, so I
cannot check this myself. If results are positive, I'll apply this
patch to TightVNC source.

I've put a patch to http://www.tightvnc.com/tmp/vnc-X.patch.gz just in
case, to make sure we refer to the same patch. Please download it from
there...

Is it possible that you was compiling Xvnc without running make in
top-level directory prior to running it in the Xvnc/ subdirectory?
