Mac,

  Thanks for the suggestion. I am now looking into vtwm
  and ctwm. Both of them seem to provide everything that
  twm does, plus the extra features I want. It is inter-
  esting that on the window manager webpage 
  (www.plig.org/xwinman) twm is described as:

  "something of mainly historical interest"

  I have used twm for over 10 years now and apart from 
  the missing "multiple-desktop" feature I have not yet
  found anything that is missing in order to do effective
  s/w development. Maybe I should consider myself as:
  "something of mainly historical interest" ;-).
