Of course what he meant is that a newsgroup would take subscribers away
from the email list, fragmenting the VNC community. Those who can't get
newsfeeds wouldn't like to see that happen.
IMHO, I'd have to say that the equation is more like:
(EMAIL_LIST - LOST_TO_NEWSGROUP -
LOST_INTEREST_BECAUSE_OF_REDUCED_MAIL_LIST_VOLUME) +
(LOST_TO_NEWSGROUP + NEW_NEWSGROUP_ONLY_SUBSCRIBERS)
is only greater than
EMAIL_LIST
if
NEW_NEWSGROUP_ONLY_SUBSCRIBERS
is greater than
LOST_INTEREST_BECAUSE_OF_REDUCED_MAIL_LIST_VOLUME
