I had a similar problem connecting to a Compaq server runing W2K until I
dropped the resolution on the server to 640x480 so I could get 256 colors.
VNC would drop the connection any time the server was set to 16 colors.
Sounds like you might be hitting a similar problem. The solution of going to
a higher bit-depth of the system running the VNC server may not be
acceptable for you though.
