No, no, discussion is good along the lines of "what is better A or B", "well I
like A better because ..." and "B does it for me because..."

It's the clarifications and "try this, if it doesn't work, try that" that the
list can do without. Once the question has been sufficiently clairified, this
could be announced to the list.

I couldn't disagree more.  I, among many others, benefit much from hearing
answers to others questions.  If your aim is to lessen the posts, think
about the gain of posts inquiring about a problem that was never discussed
in the list, but privately.  The beauty of lists like this is the discussion
factor. In fact, when the idea was devised, they where often referred to as
discussion lists as opposed to the now popular "mailing list".  To shun
technical discussion on a technical mailing list is, IMHO, a conflict of
interests.

This is a good idea, but it is very inconvenient due to
the (IMO) evil Reply-To header inserted into all vnc-list
messages, that forces all replies to go to the list. If
you have something to say that is not of general interest
or relevance, it is a huge pain to send it only to the
author of the message.
