I have VNC installed under Windows NT 4.0 (running Small business Server
with Proxy Server 2.0 and SP6a). I have enabled packet filtering and opened
ports 5800 and 5900 in the Proxy Server. Everything seems to be installed
ok but I cannot connect because I cannot input a password. When I try to
open the "Show User Defaults" dialog box it tells me that "no existing
instance of WinVNC could be contacted". I have confirmed that the WinVNC
service is installed and started. If I try to start WinVNC in application
Mode it says that "Another instance of WinVNC is already running". If I stop
the WinVNC service and start WinVNC in application mode, I can connect just
fine and see my desktop with no problem. However, I want to run this as a
service so that I can reboot the server if needed (as is frequently required
with windows). Does anyone know why I cannot "Show User Defaults" and set
my password when I am running WinVNC as a service? Has anyone else
seen/solved this problem? Thanks,

Mark Laris
