Well, for your situation, it's understood/easily guessed that
it's for Latin-1/Windows-1252 encoding.  But for a general situation,
that's not necessary true.  Anyway, if the problem is solved for
Unicode, it's solved for all.

     If you're asking for workarounds, you could use Google Notes, or
you could use MSN messengers if you are like me who's got a home
profile and a work profile and such that I could send myself an
instantaneous message.
