With your help and some more determination I was able to get this comp
working like I want using Real Vnc on the windows end and KRFB on the
Linux comp.

Terminal Server client works great for working "from" the Ubuntu comp
to my XP Pro comp.
What I am wanting though, is the opposite, to access the Ubuntu comp
from XP pro and take control of that Ubuntu machine, so Ubuntu needs
to be the server and XP the remote access viewer.
I did not see a way to do that with Terminal Server Client.
Sorry you might have missed the terminology. With vnc, the machine you
like to see is called the server side, the machine you are using is
called the client. Hence the other line: See 'Preferences ->
RemoteDesktop'. There you can setup the ubuntu machine so you can see
the console from the windows machine.
For your information, vnc comes from unix and is capable on doing much
more on unix and linux systems than it can on msWindows based machines.
There are even linux installers that can boot with a 'vnc' option so you
can use a vncviewer to do the installation remote.
It is also fairly easy (well, if you know linux/unix and X11 a little
bit) to create a terminal-server kind of setup with which you get a new
login session at every vnc-connection you make and hence use the linux
machine with more than 1 person.
With Real Vnc and Windows I have a setup where I can access a few
"slave" computers that run distributed computing programs from my
basement. (world community grid).
I can check on them from my main XP Pro comp., and do updates and
reboot etc. from my XP main desktop. This is what I would like to do
with Ubuntu, but not sure if that thought is realistic in that OS.
Real Vnc support claims the free version runs on Linux, and that is
where I am confused. Am I expecting something that Ubuntu will not
do, or am I not doing the correct process to install and make that
happen.

For the viewer, I use 'Terminal Server Client', as that can use many
protocols, including VNC and msWindows remote desktop and such.
For the server, show the destkop with 'Preferences -> RemoteDesktop'
If these options are not available, you might need to install them.
Search for 'vnc' applications in the installer and off you go.
