Here're the first thumb of rules to reduce the possible scope of problem cause: 1. Do a ping to the VNC server's computer. Use pure IP address first. Do you get any reply? If no, then you've probably got network problem OR your VNC server's computer is blocking ping (a firewall?) Make sure your VNC server's computer's firewall is correctly configured to let in ping (and VNC if it's also blocked) and try again.
2. If ping works, telnet to the server computer (to port 5900) and see if you get something like "RFB 003.008". If no, then the problem is probably the server.
