James,
   I am using VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.2 and I downloaded 
it from the www.realvnc.com site. In the VNC Viewer Options I 
unclick the "Auto Select" and then click "Color level" > "low". 
Upon closing VNC Viewer and re-opening it "Auto Select" is 
again active and "Color level" is again "Full"...... 
This happens regardless of the server I am connecting to.
