I found out that the icons will only be shown if OpenGL is enabled.
Is there a way to do this?

format, e.g. RGB888, rather than allowing arbitrary compatible formats such
as BGR888, etc.

You can use the -pixelformat option instead of -depth to set Xvnc to use a
particular format that the application is compatible with.
