Some times if the network quality is poor and there are many hops between client and server, then the connection times out. Make sure that the user does not need to acknowledge the request for connection (on the server) because that could also be a problem if you are not there to accept the request. ;-)
With regards to the room mate, have you checked the server's software firewall settings? Can you ping the server? What do you get if you telnet or nc into the relevant port?
