an extension of VNC viewer."
Which makes it sound like it could have RealVNC code inside, but it is
written in Java, so maybe not. Anyway, I don't know why it wasn't
released under GPL. I won't use it.

Hi Mike,
I read your E-mail in the public VNC mailing list archive regarding
the VNCRobot licensing issue and I feel like reacting to it. My name
is Robert Pes and I'm author and owner of the tool.
There's no RealVNC code in VNCRobot. The sentences you cited,
"VNCRobot is a tool based on a VNC client." and "VNCRobot is an
extension of VNC viewer.", are not meant to indicate that there's a
third party VNC client embedded in the tool. It was rather coded from
the scratch in Java and it contains a proprietary VNC client
implementation based on the public version of the RFB 3.3 protocol.
Plus, the tool has in fact never been tested with a RealVNC server. I
do all QA entirely on a TightVNC server and this is properly
documented in the Install Notes.
I would be glad if you could publish the above statement about the
code in the E-mail thread to clear up the situation and to prevent
eventual speculations about the VNCRobot code origin and license.
The tool is being distributed under a freeware license for historical
reasons. There are certain plans to open source the code: it is
however a matter of resources which I do not currently have. I'm full
time employee of a large IT company and VNCRobot is just my private
pet project. I'm in fact quite happy that this activity is tolerated
by my employer. At the time the other option was not to release the
tool at all and I'm glad I can provide it to the community at least
this way.
Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions,
Robert Pes
