Gregg,

It sounds like you're entering the laptop's IP address into the viewer,
rather than the desktop's.  There's no magic to connecting to a server - VNC
Viewer just connects to the IP address or DNS name you tell it to, so if you
tell it the wrong name or address, you'll connect to the wrong computer.
I'm assuming that you're connecting via a LAN, since you say you've disabled
port-forwarding in your router.
