Joe, Having tried this myself, the wsinfo command prints up a message about OPENWINHOME not being set, before crashing.
So at a guess, I'd say that the problem is that OPENWINHOME isn't set (which is not surprising, since you're probably not running Openwin in your VNC session) and that wsinfo has a bug that causes it to crash if it's not set.
