I posted an item on the 29th September 2004 re: Server Closed Connection Unexpectedly and I would like to thank Angelo Sarto, Tom Wright, Alan Watchorn and "Joe D" for their comments and helpful advise. This has helped me "sort the problem" so to speak. However, for those new to the RealVNC software (like me) I'm happy to summarise the solution for those with similar problems. My configuration is documented in the previous posting but to summarise: I'm wanting to get my Laptop (192.168.1.3) to talk to my PC (192.168.1.2) and visa versa via a combined WAP/Router/ADSL modem (192.168.1.1). I am using a wireless connection (Laptop to Router) and Ethernet (Router to LAN). This is all happening on my side of the gateway - note I am NOT talking about connection to my Laptop or PC via the Internet and gateway (I'll do that later :o) - I know tunnelling isn't the easiest of subject but I'm eating the elephant one mouthful at a time). My strategy to setting up RealVNC is to get one way working, duplicate the set up the other way round and it should work. Logical if nothing else. OK so what was the solution: I was running VNC Server 4 in "Service Mode" and trying to access it via the VNC Viewer. When I ran VNC Server 4 in "User Mode" the two talked to each other - all be it shortly (thanks for the tip Angelo). This at least proved the traffic was getting through my router and that "Port Forwarding" was NOT needed (remember I'm "my" side of the gateway). >From this I'm assuming that the viewer is only used to communicate in "User Mode" and >that a browser is only used to communicate in "Service Mode". Sorry to all those >experts who are now falling about laughing but it wasn't obvious to me and I still >don't know if this is correct. But it works for me as they say. OK moving on !!! So I now had connection (for a shot time at any rate). The problem was that having run the viewer on my PC it was causing my Laptop - running the server (in User Mode :o) ) - to "blue screen" and re-boot. Not exactly a practical solution to remote access. The problem turned out to be the Colour/Encoding Settings in the viewer: it was set to "Auto Select" - when I selected either ZRLE, HEXTITE or RAW it all worked (although HEXTITE failed once on me). I settled on RAW as I like the presentation. Don't know why I had this problem but I'd guess that its something to do with my video card - but I don't care - it works and thats a bonus :o). But what about all those setting - that got me somewhat confused and could have been part of the problem. OK FOR "USER MODE" ONLY USING VIEWER ACCESS (BE WARNED !!! IT IS DIFFERENT FOR "SERVICE MODE" USING BROWSER ACCESS) LAPTOP (192.168.1.3) Running the Server in the VNC Server Properties (for User Mode) >>> Connection Tab >>> Accept Connection on Port 5903 DESKTOP (192.168.1.2) Running the Viewer: Server Setting 192.168.1.3:3 and the other way: DESKTOP (192.168.1.2) running the Server using port 5902 - see the logic ? - use 192.168.1.2:2 on the Laptop running the viewer. Other "Bits and Bobs": Firewalls - I had my gateway firewall enabled and the XP and Norton Internet Security Firewalls disabled on both the laptop and PC. I have reactivated the NIS with no adverse effect and for those who have come across it I have NOT had to remove port 80 from the list of scanned ports in NIS - although this may be an issue when I connect through the Internet and my gateway. Window XP issues - I have disable "Fast User Switching" but thinks still work with it enabled provided I log out of each user - I have multiple users on each machine - so in effect I don't use the facility. "Remote Desktop" is disabled I disabled the "Use the Welcome Screen" facility but it works with this disabled or enabled. Hope this is of use to someone out there who - like me - is new to the product. Stick in there folks it a good product and is worth the effort. But what about the NEW problem - well this is related to getting the browser to work but I'll cover that in another email because its the next problem that I need some help with. To pre-empt some emails I can get Browser access to work Laptop to PC but not PC to Laptop - I suspect a setting in XP - but its not that obvious as it first appears.. Regards to all.
