Ronald, I've replied to the list instead so that others with similar
questions may benefit from some help as well...

The port numbers referred to after the IP address is the port # that VNC
uses as the default.. 5900 is the default for "screen 1"..you use the
subsequent port #'s for other screens..i.e. screen 2 is 5901, etc.

You use these when you need to access more than one server from a shared IP
address. There's another thread right now in the list discussing this exact
topic, so I won't go into details here.

Hope that helped.

Regards,

Arthur

Arthur,
You have my extreme respect & gratitude.
Win XP Firewall... Who knew? No one told me, lol.
Thanks

PS, 1 more question:
Why do some people use port numbers after their IP address, such as
80.xxx.xxx.xxx:5900 Are these for clients on a web-server?

Thanks again
:)

Ronald, being on dial-up or otherwise is irrelevant. They certainly use
routers and probably block some ports. The type of connection that you have
to MCI is totally irrelevant as far as their connections to the Internet and
whether or not they do any filtering.

If, in fact they don't block any ports at all, your best bet is to make sure
that you don't have anything going on either...i.e. Windows XP firewall? I
would first try to make sure you can ping the other machine as suggested.
Maybe a little more information would help too...O/S, VNC versions.
There's
plenty of help in the FAQ at realvnc.com.

Good luck! Regards,

Arthur

Subject: VNC will not work via dial-up Pt.2

Hello all,
Heres the situation:
2 stand-alone computers in a large room, each with access to the internet.
I want to test VNC from one to another.

(stuff deleted)

CORRECTION:
My account is a Dial-Up account, so they DO NOT use a firewall.

Question:
What else could it be?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Noni
