Had exactly the same problem.  It is a bug with VNC4, but the work around is easy.

Under Accessibility within Settings (or Control Panel) turn on `Mouse Keys`.  This is 
where you can use the keyboard's number pad as the pointing device.

Because Windows see's a pointing of some form device present, it'll show the mouse 
pointer.
