I just upgraded my (RedHat 9) Linux vncserver from 3.3 to 4.0 (with the 4.0b4
client) because of an extremely annoying bug: whenever a particular sequence
of characters is typed during a session over a remote line (throttled by our
1MB DSL connection) the control key would be activated, until I tapped it to
reset it. The character sequence which would set this off? 'grep' (or some
subset thereof).
I leave it to the reader to imagine how many unprintable remarks were
unleashed before I upgraded the server to v 4.0.
Now the problem has cleared up, but when I quickly type the magic string now,
I get a Beep. This is also the effect when I use the Windows client (also
V4, on XP). Compared to what I was putting up with, this is heavenly and
I'll deal with it.
But what's going on here? Is there some way to supress the beeping? It
seems hard to believe this is a compression-related bug but that's all I can
think of given that it only happens when I type fast.
I will say that VNC is great and once it was introduced to our company all
the commercial PC-based X server programs were consigned to the dustbins of
history without a backward glance. There's no problem at all over a local
LAN connection.
