I might have suspected a compilation issue, but what I forgot to mention is
that VNC worked soon after I copied the new executables and DLLs from the
Release directory into the VNC4 directory and ran vncviewer. But the next
time I ran it I got the SelectObject error.

Actually, I used Visual C++ Toolkit 2003, not .NET. It includes updated
versions of cl.exe, link.exe, but not nmake.exe, so in retrospect my
Makefiles wouldn't be useful for anyone who doesn't already have nmake (eg.
from Visual Studio 6.0).

Does the running OS need to have the .NET framework installed in order to
run that vncviewer?
