After reading more about X I found that the key combination CTRL-ALT-<-> or CTRL-ALT-<+> changes the screen resolution on the fly. However, I can't seem to pass this key combination from windows client to the VNC desktop running on a linux machine. I've tried various suggestions on the list of sending CTRL using the VNC menu and holding down other keys but this doesn't work. Any way to do this?
