Because unfortunately, the mailing-list server isn't 8-bit aware! :(  If your 
mail programme can be configured to use printed-quotable, use this.  My stupid Outlook 
doesn't allow me to do this ...... well, at least I can't find where this is defined.

        I wonder if the mail server is maintained......
