Norman,

The fact that you use dyndns.org to capture your changing ip address has
nothing to do with your vnc server connecting. The only thing that matters
is that your johnsmith.homedns.org resolves to the actual correct ip.

Make sure it's resolving to the correct ip address.
Make sure your vnc server is listening on the correct ports
And if you have a router in between make sure you have the correct ports
forwarding the machine with your vnc server on it.
