I'm sure it is the archives because I have had this exact converstation
before (including the answer of "you can't do it with that").

I suggest you re-read the docs.  Quoting the "AuthHosts" section:
"Terms beginning with the "?" character are treated by default as
indicating hosts from whom connections must be accepted at the server side
via a dialog box."  QuerySetting, QueryTimeout, and AuthHosts options all
control what IP's can access the machine and if there will be a dialog box
or not.
