Walt,
While I don't know what you're doing wrong, here is a
data point for you.
I run OSXvnc (v1.0) server on an iBook running Mac OS 10.2.3,
and access it fine from a VNC viewer running on a Sun workstation.
It works great.
By the way, I used to use the AT&T Mac viewer running in Classic
mode on the iBook when, say, needing to view a Solaris VNC server.
I know you're viewing from Mac OS 8.5 so Mac OS X solutions are
not options, but I found this to work better than using Mac OS X
viewers VNCThing or VNCDimension. But now, the X11-based VNC viewer
from Fink, running in XDarwin (not Apple's new X11 beta, which has
some problems with this), is by far my preferred way of doing VNC
viewing on Mac OS X.
