What goal are you trying to acheive by shutting down the desktop? VNC by
default can be left running (with your desktop and programs running) so that
you can re-connect at any point and be at the same place. Normally that
would mean just shutting down the VNCViewer locally. When you reconnect to
the server you will see the same screen that you had when you closed the
vncviewer.

Other setups do exist that kill your VNC session when you log out,
presenting you with a log-in screen and a fresh desktop. I would image that
would be a pain if you get disconnected in the middle of a session, though.
