Have you restricted the VNC server with AuthHosts? What kind of router is sitting between the two machines? Does a machine on the same subnet as the WinXP box work? What did you use to scan the WinXP box? Port 25 is SMTP and 110 is POP3, so hopefully that is your antivirus software. If you use Windows Networking there should be more ports open (135,139,445).
