My understanding is that XP provides a 32-bit X86 virtual machine, much in
the same way that NT4.0 Alpha did - and we all know how swift and efficient
THAT was (the emulator, that is).

I haven't a clue.  Will ordinary x86 programs run on Itanium under 
XP/64?  If so, then probably.  However, from reports I've heard, 
ia64's x86 emulation is extremely inefficient.
