If it's any help, when I had this problem I got authenicated to the Windows 
machines and while I could move the mouse (so the user told me)- all I saw 
from my  viewer PC was a grey screen. 

The grey screen - at least in my experience - is due to a bad MTU size on the 
router. Other than messing about with the service pack, I'd check the MTU size 
on the VPN box and also on the local 2000 box.
