I can't say that what you say will never happen, as far as developers not incorporating accessibility into their main stream applications because an application written specifically for the blind exists, but I'm not sure how frequently this really happens. I'd suspect most mainstream developers aren't familiar with the applications and products out there developed specifically for the blind. I'd also think it's more likely a developer would just ignore the request to add accessibility taking the attitude that blind people would never use a product like this or it just can't be made accessible. The fact that blind people are using such a product developed with the blind in mind would be a counter argument to just being dismissed like this.

I do think we should still campaign for accessibility to be included in main stream applications even if a blindness specific alternative already exists. This has already born fruit. I mean look at the iPhone, iPod, accessible mainstream GPS and OCR applications and so on. There are note takers, MP3 players, GPS systems and OCR tools developed specifically for the blind, but this didn't seem to stop mainstream applications from being made more accessible.

I don't think your second and third points really have anything to do with blindness specific products. If an application isn't incorporating the updates you need then don't buy it. There are plenty of mainstream applications that die on the vine, so this isn't unique to blindness specific products at all. BTW, applications don't always need to be updated constantly to still be useful.

Similarly, if an application is too basic or doesn't have the advanced features you're looking for then don't purchase it or use it. Again, I don't see this as being unique to blindness specific products.

I'm not trying to talk anyone into using blindness specific products, but for me, my independence, productivity and efficiency, and my ability to compete with my sighted peers, will have me using whatever tools are at my disposal. I'd much rather use a blindness specific product if the alternative is being unemployed or getting weaker performance evaluations.

Hi,
You want to know the reason why i avoid using blind specific apps as far
as i possibly can?
1: Blindness specific apps send a signal to developers that they need
not bother to put accessibility into main stream apps, because a
solution exists that blind are going to prefer anyway.
2: As someone stated earlier, blind specific apps tend not to be updated
past the first version and the first bug fix release, then they get
forgotten.
3: Some, *not all* but some developers tend to oversimplify and exclude
features even down to a basic level and to me at least it is like
they're saying that blind folks can't chew chewing gum and walk at the
same time, that in my not so humble opinion is an insult of my
inteligence. I'm not saying we should have bells and whistles by the
score and just because they can, but if one makes, say a calendar,
something that already exists and is accessible don't omit features
that are basic. Now let me say this once again, not all developers do
this but i've seen those who do. Let's also be clear on one more point,
there are apps that are really needed, like screen readers, money
identifiers, some apps that adds extra gps info to standard gps apps etc
but there are other apps that reinvent the wheel but more over
simplified, like certain calendars, calculators and the like.
Just my 0.02.

Charles I am one of those who would prefer to use a mainstream app if
it exists. The reasons for this are that they are sometimes updated
more frequently and that they are generally less expensive. The KNFB
reader and the GPS apps are both good examples of how expensive apps
are. I understand the reasons for this and don't want to get into a
huge debate. I am just expressing my reasons for preferring off the
shelf apps.

I don't understand why people seem to be against using apps and products
that are blind specific. It seems like people avoid them like the
plague,
and, in a lot of instances, you're not getting full advantage of your
device, such as an iPhone. Some mainstream apps just don't work as well
for
a blind user.

Hi,

I have tried the direct typing method, and i don't know what i think
about
it really. I have now installed Fleksy something i thought i would
never do
given that it was designed as a blind specific product in the first
place,
but now when it's actually available in Swedish i can experience for
myself
how powerful it really is. But that's also just an option amongst others.

Actually, you might be surprised. What's useless for one may be the next
best thing for another. Personally, I am rather excited about the direct
touch typing feature. While I made quite a few mistakes within the first
three or four minutes of playing with it, my speed and accuracy picked up
dramatically within the hour. For those whom muscle memory and spacial
orientation come more naturally, it's a pretty neat option. But it's just
that, an option, and personally, I applaud Apple for giving us more of
them.
