Hank, The functionality you want is in the Direct TV app for iPad but not in the iPhone app. I use the iPad version on my iPad Mini and it's fairly accessible once you get to know the app. You can even see what's you've recorded on the DVR, allowing you to play, or delete recordings.
There may be third party apps however for the iPhone that might work for you. Do a search in the app store for directv.
