Hi Ed, The iPad is not a phone so you can only get a cellular data package. If you wanted to use it for calling this is only possible via VoIP services/apps like Skype or any number of other ones. However, you cannot get a SIM card or put the SIM from your iPhone in the iPad so that it would turn into a phone.
Many VoIP services are primarily outbound which means you can make calls. If you want to receive calls you have to either buy a Skype In number which is a regular phone number and which, if people call it, will ring in Skype (the Skype app has to be open for that to work) or you have to get an inbound VoIP telephone number from a company like Flynumber (once again, there are many others out there) and then register that number with a service like SIPGateway, SIP2SIP etc. Then you need an app like Acrobits or Groundwire (both from the same company) and set up the app to work with your VoIP service/services. I have an inbound VoIP number from Flynumber.com which costs me $2.95 US a months and this includes unlimited forwarding of calls to my SIP2SIP user name which in turn is setup on my iPhone using the Groundwire app (it costs $9.99). For making outbound VoIP calls I use VoIP Stunt which doesn't cost any monthly fee, you just buy some credit (if you buy 10 Euros you get 120 days of free calls to many countries, then after that it is 1 Euro Cent per minute). Once you used up most of your credit you can top it up again with 10 Euros which puts you back on 120 days of free calls. Whether something like this would make sense for you depends entirely on how much calling you do and to which countries as well as on what sort of plan you have on your iPhone. If you know other people who also have iPhones, iPads or iPod Touches you can also soon make just audio cals using Facetime. Apple announced in June that when iOS 7 is released in September that you can make audio only Facetime calls between iDevices, however, I believe both parties have to be running iOS 7 for audio only to work. So are you saying I would get a data sim from my cellular provider or would I have to take the sim out of my iPhone. The iPad with wifi and cellular is what I got. The model number is a1460 I think. So you are also saying that if I want to have phone service on my iPad I would have to get another sim and pay another service fee to have phone service on the iPad? I am just trying to understand all the options for this devices so I thank you very much for all your assistance.
