Hello Listers,

I initially talked about the Netatmo Weather Station back in November when I
bought mine. I initially had a lot of problems getting it to connect to my
WiFi, but that's all fixed now and the company has been absolutely
outstanding with respect to customer service and technical support.

After I contacted them to make them aware of Voiceover accessibility they
promised they would look into this. Once Christmas and New Year had passed,
the head developer contacted me and said he was going to work on
accessibility and whether I was willing to beta test the app. I of course
agreed and within a couple of weeks received the first version. He had made
huge progress and only missed a few things, just extra information Voiceover
read which didn't have to be there. I received a second Beta about a week or
10 days ago and all of the things I pointed out were fixed and the app has
now been submitted to Apple as of last Friday. It should be available
publically later this week and I thought I start another thread about this
for those who are interested in a weather station which is specifically made
for iDevices and which now comes with an app where Voiceover can read all
the important data.

There still are graphs which a sighted person would access by turning the
phone to landscape orientation and those are not accessible and apparently
cannot be made accessible. However, all aspects of Settings, Help files and
the main screen of the app work perfectly well with Voiceover. Below is an
initial outline of what information you can read with Voiceover and also
what is in the Settings area.

Carlos, the head of the development team of this small French company has
even added me to his Skype contacts so we could initially talk directly. He
walked me through the app and what it should and could do and I in turn told
him how everything worked with Voiceover. One example that I thought was
pretty cool was when we spoke for the first time after I received the Beta
version of the app. I guess he accidently labeled both Outdoor and Indoor
Temperature as "Outdoor Temperature". I told him and went on to say that of
course it was obvious which was which from where it was located and by the
time I finished talking he said "No problem, I just fixed it". I guess this
shows how easy it apparently is to fix labels for buttons and screen
elements and it makes me mad at Sonos who I asked to properly label a few
buttons for over 2 years now.

Netatmo is a prime example of a company who has made an app accessible
despite the fact that I know of only 2 or 3 others from the list who so far
have actually purchased the weather station. The weather station does cost
$180 and I know that this is not a price point for everybody, but I also
know it is something some of us Apple/iOS fans can afford especially now
that the accessibility is there.

For those who want more information you can check out www.Netatmo.com and I
would be happy to respond to any direct emails if you feel what you want to
say or ask should not be on the list. You can email me directly at
[email protected].

There is also an iPad version of the app and Carlos will be addressing
accessibility for it now that the iPhone version is done so an accessible
iPad version should at most be a month or 2 away. OK, here now some more
details about the app:

The following is the information Voiceover can read, you can either slide
your finger around the screen or flick:

Outdoor Temperature

Outdoor Minimum and Maximum Temperature for the current day

Outdoor humidity

Outdoor Feels Like Temperature

Outdoor Air Quality (taken from the nearest public/official weather station
that supports it)

Indoor Comfort

Indoor CO2 Level in parts per million

Indoor Temperature

Indoor Minimum and Maximum Temperature for the current day

Acoustic Comfort

Indoor Humidity

Indoor barometric Pressure (which is also outdoor pressure as those are
always the same)

There are also 3 buttons at the top:

Top left: Menu

Tap on that and it changes to "Settings".

I'm not sure why it's not settings right away, but I assume it has a reason
since there is information that is visual and not included with what
Voiceover reads.

Anyhow, double tap on Settings and you get the following:

My Account, link

Here your account's email is displayed and you can change the password,
change the email or change units (metric or imperial).

My Stations, link

Here you see your station, you can install a new station or buy a new
station.

If you double tap on your existing station you can do all sorts of stuff
from renaming the name of the Station, I called mine "Home", you can rename
the indoor and outdoor modules (mine are called "Kitchen" and "Deck",
respectively), to reconfiguring the WiFi, calibrating CO2 readings and more.

My Invitations, link

Here Voiceover reads this:

Invite your friends to access your station. They will access its
measurements from their Netatmo account.

You can also invite with Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn or by
email.

You can also "become a contributor" and make your stations data public .

My Third Party Apps, link

This is to revoke access for apps you previously granted access to the
Netatmo Weather Station.

I was told that Netatmo provides an API for other developers of devices such
as home automation devices which would give them the ability to access data
from the weather station to use with their device. Not sure if anything like
this already exists, but this is where you would manage this.

Help, link: this is fully accessible text you can read with Voiceover

The second button at the top is "Change Station". This doesn't do anything
unless you have more than one station in which case this is where you would
switch stations to see the readings from each.

The third button is "Events" and here you see a listing of all events like
when the app sends a push notification about high CO2 levels, low
temperatures or you can see weekly and monthly summary information like what
the monthly minimum and maximum temperatures were etc.

You can also configure personalized notifications in the My Station area of
the Settings.

Lastly, and before the actual readings, you have the time when the last
update happened. I believe the station updates readings every 30 minutes,
but you can always push on the indoor module's big button (it's more of a
sensor than a button) and it forces an update and you can see the update
time change in the app within 10 or 20 seconds.

Netatmo will also release an additional module/sensor one can buy in the
next few months which will measure rainfall. Typically such sensors consist
of a small cup which would fill with rain and the sensor would pass on the
information to the weather station.

This has to be done in a separate sensor since this would have to be out in
the open air so it's exposed to any precipitation that occurs. I don't know
the exact time when this will be released nor do I know a price, but if I
find out I'll let everybody know. I definitely plan to get it since it's
nice to know the amount of precipitation in addition to temperatures,
humidity etc.

Regards,

Sieghard
