I actually take it one step further. I set up a normal Gmail account and only enable mail and notes. Then I set up a second account as an exchange account and give it the same Gmail username and password. In that second one I only enable contacts and calendars. This contacts from the exchange set up is what I use as my main contacts for my phone. The calendar is also my main calendar. Doing it this way allows me to manage Google calendars and add other things like US holidays and star dates and other interesting types of calendars.
