To add a new line without sending, hold down the option key. The messages app on the Mac is pretty straight forward. Navigate the table of conversations, VO spacebar on the one you want to work with, go to the edit field, start typing and send, or read messages and tap back, or reply to them. To start a new message, command N, to reply to a message, command r, also look in the menu bar, there are other commands that may seem useful. Those i have listed above are the most common ones.
