Tom’s method is the Voiceover specific method, just touching the top and swiping down with one finger is the way everybody does it and it basically mirrors the swipe up from the bottom for going to the home screen or for bringing up the app switcher. If you swipe up from the bottom you swipe up to the first haptic feedback for home and a little further to the second for the app switcher. If you swipe down from the top it’s similar, if you lift your finger when you get to the first haptic feedback you bring up the control centre and if you swipe down a bit further to the second haptic feedback and lift, you bring up notification centre. It probably helps if your iPhone is in a case with a little bit of an edge, I simply touch the top of the phone and have my finger right up against the edge of my case and then I swipe down for either the control centre or the notification centre. This works on the lock screen as well as from any home screen or from within any app. If you quickly touch either the very bottom or the very top right up against the edge of your case and immediately lift your finger again, you should hear a little tone, it sounds as soon as your finger touches the screen. That is the signal that you are in the right place to swipe up or down. At the top if you hear “dynamic island” or the time or battery level, in other words any of the items in the status bar, you are not touching high enough and it does not take a hard tap or press, just a light touch at the very top and then swipe down. Below is a link to a short recording I made, I am wearing my PC headset and I am using the Windows Sound Recorder app, but I hold the phone quite close to the headset and you can hear the tone, it almost sounds like a little tap. I saved this to my Dropbox and clicking the link will download the file to your computer’s download folder as this seems to be what most people prefer instead of having it open in a web interface where you then have to find the Play button:
