Richard, in a way these glasses do what the phone does except it allows you to
do it hands free and in my opinion that is a big deal. I have tried to use my
iPhone with the Seeing AI app or even with Aira or Be My Eyes trying to maybe
locate a store entrance as I was walking along with my dog’s harness in my left
hand and my iPhone in the right pointing it towards the stores I was passing
and believe me, using the glasses for that is ten times easier. There are many
other examples where the same is true and I also find it much easier to point
the camera of the glasses where it needs to go with an Aira agent or even
during a video call with a friend because if somebody tells me to look just a
tiny bit more to the left and down, that is much easier than if you have to
make that adjustment with the iphone in your hand.
With the Ray-Ban meta glasses and using Live AI where your video feed is
constantly analysed, certain things are way easier. One example is at my store
if I am looking at a shelf with dozens of boxes of hiking boots. Trying to find
a particular style and size with the Seeing AI app using an iPhone is possible,
but I have to very carefully make sure I hold it close enough so it only reads
the text on that box and not the one beside it, below it or above it and it’s
very easy to angle your phone a bit without noticing it. With the Meta glasses
I just say to enable Live AI, then I point to the label on a box and ask “What
does it say on this box” or similar, if it’s not the right one I can point to
one below and ask “how about this one” etc.
And finally if I am wearing the glasses and I am in a situation where I want to
quickly take a picture or video, I can do this easier than any other way. I
have been in situations where I wish I could have taken a picture or video like
when I cross a street with my walk signal beeping and some idiot who doesn’t
pay attention runs the red light. Unless you had your phone in hand and ready
to go, there is no way you could take a picture quick enough, but with my
Ray-Ban glasses all it would take is to reach up and press the camera button as
I am turning my head to look after the car and there is a very good chance I
would end up with a picture with the license plate readable. If my hands were
full, I could even just say “Hey Meta, take a picture” or “Hey Meta, record a
video”.

The Envision Ally app is free on the phone. I use my iPhone camera as I have no
interest is spending hundreds of dollars for glasses that duplicate what the
camera can do.

So I emailed Envision to try to ask some questions and beyond an automated
reply on Monday, haven’t heard back. Kind of disappointed and reticent to
pre-order if this is the level of support.

Just heard about the Ally app today. It seems like basically an AI assistant
but made with accessibility in mind, and with features like OCR, describing
images, etc. Hadn’t heard of it before and curious if anyone else has used it.
