I try to keep Rotor on Character. Carolyn Arnold

I was always changing the speech level. My solution was to never leave the roder on the speech rate option until I needed it. I would also make sure that only one finger is touching the screen when doing the home and app switcher gestures. If you happen to have another finger touching the screen, the phone could think that you are doing a roder gesture. Personally, I created a special gesture for the home screen and app switcher gestures and only use the regular gesture occasionally. I really like using the custom gesture option, it is much more fluid and natural to me than the regular gestures. Since the 16E doesn’t have a physical Home button, I’ve had to rely entirely on gesture-based navigation — especially the swipe up from the bottom to go Home or open the App Switcher. Here’s the issue I’m facing: When I perform these gestures, particularly when VoiceOver focus is near the bottom of the screen, the Rotor sometimes reacts — switching Activities unexpectedly or triggering features like Screen Recognition. It feels like the gesture is being misinterpreted as a Rotor movement. To work around this, I’ve been manually setting the Rotor to something like “Containers” or “Headings” before doing the gesture, and that seems to help. Still, it’s something I never had to worry about before — not on the SE, and not even on my iPad 9th Generation, which still has a Home button. (There, I actually like using the new gestures, and they don’t cause this kind of conflict.) One thing that might be contributing: I usually leave the Rotor on “Activities” since I use one Activity for English and another for Spanish. I never saw a need to switch away from it constantly — but with these new gesture-based interactions, I’m having to be much more mindful about that. I’ve considered assigning a custom gesture, like a three-finger triple-tap, to perform the “Go to Home” action — which might avoid the conflict altogether. But doing that feels like it would take away from the whole point of learning and adapting to the new gesture system, so I’m hesitant to go that route. Has anyone else dealt with something similar? Am I maybe just performing the gesture slightly off, or is this a known quirk when using the Rotor with Activities? Would love to hear your thoughts or any suggestions you’ve found helpful.
