When I first set up face ID, I had hair, a beard and no glasses. Since then, I
shaved my head, went clean shaven for a few weeks and now have a goatee. I've
also used my iPhone with and without sun glasses. I've basically never had any
problems with face ID. I was holding the phone a bit too close to my face early
on, so I was getting a few more failures then I liked, but now the only time I
have any trouble is when I'm a bit to lazy when unlocking my phone, like when I
forgot to point it at my face.

As others have said, you can set up an alternative face and do all of this
later. I'm totally blind, and I did all of this myself when I got my iPhone.
Another nice thing about face ID is that you can also configure a lot of apps
to use face ID, so no need to use a user ID and password to log in.

Hi Jim,

There is an option to set an alternate view, so I would do it first without the
sunglasses.
Then, if it doesn't recognize you with the sunglasses, try setting the
alternate view with them.
The beard trimming won't matter. I have a beard and it always works, unless I
reboot the phone, then it requires the passcode.

I'm totally blind, but had sight until I was 12, but I set it up on my own.

The key is holding the phone about 6 to 12 inches from your face, probably more
like 8 to 12.
I'd start with your nose touching the center of the screen, then pull it back
keeping it straight up and down.

Once you start the Face ID, you will be given directions by VoiceOver to look
up toward 12 o'clock, then rotate clockwise in a circle, slowly.
It will give you status reports as you go.
You will likely have to do it twice.
So long as the phone doesn't move, it should work.

You can set it up any time.

Subject: Specifics About Face ID

Greetings,
I've seen talk before on this list about advantages and disadvantages of using
Face ID. Sieghard recently made a very good point about the ease and
convenience of Face ID as opposed to needing to put in a code.
Today is the day I update phones to a 15 pro, and I'm willing to do the Face
ID, but I'd like to ask for some specifics rather than opinions.
Here goes.
First, I generally wear sunglasses when I'm out. Of course, if I'm just home
and such, then I don't. Will Face ID recognize me with or without sunglasses,
or will I only be able to use Face ID a certain way?
Second, I have a beard. Will it recognize me with it either long or trimmed?
I guess I basically want to know what it will recognize regarding my facial
features, and how I should best do my Face ID for the best possible recognition.
Since I am totally blind, is this something I can do on my own, or is it best
to have sighted assistance?
Oh, finally, is Face ID something I can do later on, once the rest of my phone
is set up, or something I need to do as I set my phone up?
My apology for my specific questions, but I want to get this as best as I can.
