Spatial audio is not intended for mono playback at all. There is nothing spatial about a person reading a book. When you listen to something where the direction of the sound makes a difference, you may find it adds a lot of depth to the experience; but then again you might not. But certainly evaluating spatial audio based on an audio book is somewhat pointless.
