I have heard that the "sheet grabber" icon near the top of the screen on some apps can actually cause the on-screen keyboard to be hidden. I think it acts as a toggle. Perhaps this has been double tapped by accident and the on-screen keyboard is no longer visible. Try double tapping it again and see if the keyboard returns. It's a long shot but who knows?
