I don’t have this device, but according to the description on their web site, it does work in conjunction with your smart phone, and it would be good if you’re using it with a device that doesn’t have an NFC chip available to the WayAround app or you want to scan items without constantly interacting with your phone, in a continual scan mode. Here’s what it says on their web page:

If your phone does not have a built-in NFC reader, the WayLink Scanner will enable your device to work with WayAround. It is also ideal for anywhere you prefer to use your phone hands-free. The lightweight WayLink Scanner fits in the palm of your hand. It uses Bluetooth to connect to your smartphone.
