It is definitely something the original owner needs to do before they sell the iPhone and anybody who intends to buy a used iPhone needs to remember one thing:
Buyer beware Fortunately and as a comment for anybody in Canada, carriers here are no longer allowed to lock phones or charge to have them unlocked as of December 1, 2017. The CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications) commission which is an independent commission overseeing regulations and enforcement of them has ruled in 2017 that as of December 1 all new phones which are sold must be unlocked and if a customer asks a carrier to unlock their older phone the carrier is not allowed to charge, typically carriers charged $50 Canadian for this before and apparently made over $37 Million a year from this. So unless you are buying a used iPhone X or iPhone 8/8 Plus or older here in Canada it is highly unlikely your phone would be locked and I assume that even those phones which came out in September or, as in the case of the iPhone X, I think it was early November when it was already clear this would take effect a few weeks later I doubt even those would be locked. Certainly no iPhone XS/XS Max/XR (released in the fall of 2018), any iPhone 11 family phone (released in the fall of 2019 and no iPhone 12 family phone (released last fall) would be locked whether you bought it from a carrier or directly from Apple. Then it doesn't matter if it's unlocked or not. But if they're with Verizon, don't know longer selling locked phones. > On Sep 6, 2021, at 6:50 PM, Kay Malmquist <[email protected]> wrote: > > So, if I am buying it from someone else, it is up to them to get it > unlocked? > > Kay Malmquist > [email protected] > > "Where focus goes, energy flows." > Bob Proctor > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Joseph Hudson" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Monday, September 06, 2021 6:31 PM > Subject: Re: Unlocking an iPhone > > > Hello, it's a simple as calling your carrier, letting them know, that > you want to unlock your iPhone, they will ask you for an IMEI number > that is under the about section of your phone.
