When you say you "acquired" it, do you mean you bought it brand new or is it used? If it's used maybe whoever had it didn't reset it back to factory defaults and this is the only time where a triple press of the power button will work unless of course later on when it's all set up and you specify that a triple click of the power button should turn Voiceover on/off.
