I’ll add to Richard’s post to make clear that you triple press the large power button on the right of the device with the device screen up in order to activate Voiceover. There are also two volume buttons on the left side of the device and you don’t use those. And when you’re activating an iPhone’s side buttons, it takes a press as opposed to a tap to engage them.
