Steve, Unfortunately, whenever you change to a new iDevice, you lose all the content in BARD Mobile that was on the old device regardless of that device's backup status. NLS is aware of this issue and is working toward a conversion to the cloud which will address it along with making other features also available. However, this process is going to take quite a while to complete.
I've never lost content in Voice Dream Reader when I've upgraded to a new device but I've always had both an iCloud wifi backup as well as an encrypted iTunes backup on my local computer.
